The young athletes joined together for a day of friendly multi-sport competition which began with a Welcoming Ceremony and Grand Parade. After the parade the young people began the serious business of the day, competing in their chosen sport. These included table tennis, athletics, canoeing, judo, swimming, cycling, new age kurling and many more sports.
Boys and girls selected to represent Winchester in the table tennis competition were trained by South Wonston Table Tennis Club. The boys’ competition began with group play and moved on to a knock out competition and a knock out consolation event. The girls played a round robin competition where all played all.
Winchester’s young table tennis team competed strongly and returned home with a gold medal (Ben Cawston) a silver medal (Adele Payne) and two bronze medals (Calvin Barlow and Nicholas Aldous).
We are very proud of Team Winchester, Well done!"
Here are the match scores:
Winchester 6 Andover 0
Winchester 4 Portsmouth B 2
Winchester 4 Brighton 2

![]() | GB Olympic TT player Alison Gordon (now Broe) has been giving England Junior Tressa Armitage one-on-one coaching at IBM Hursley. It looks like very hard work as well as fun! League matches going on at the other end of the hall seem a bit easygoing by comparison. |
Jenna Armitage reports: A group of enthusiastic young people from Winchester travelled to Aldershot for the Hampshire Youth Games on Saturday 19th June 2010. The table tennis team, made up of year 7 and 8 boys and girls, was trained by South Wonston Table Tennis Club - many of them had only been playing table tennis for a matter of weeks but all were keen to put their new found skills to the test in their first competitive tournament. We hope it will be the first of many for these talented young people.
Seven boys and three girls were selected to represent Winchester in the Hampshire Youth Games’ table tennis event and the team, with coaches and supporters (David and Jenna), first attended the Opening Ceremony at the Athletics Stadium at Aldershot. Children from all parts of Hampshire filled the stadium with colour and noise and with Winchester in their orange shirts, New Forest in dark green, Portsmouth in purple and Andover in sky blue (to name but a few) the "rainbow nation" had come to Hampshire!
After the HipHop Dance exhibition and the Parade of Games it was down to business. The boys’ table tennis team began their tournament in groups and faced youngsters from all over Hampshire. They battled hard and fought to move forward to the first round of the main tournament. Some of our youngsters enjoyed success in the consolation tournament also, but Ben Payne reached the semi final of the main tournament and won the bronze medal.
What a fantastic achievement for Ben’s first event!!
Meanwhile the Winchester girls played a round robin event against a more experienced team from Portsmouth. Many of our young girls had their first taste of success and Adele Payne (Ben’s sister) came third, receiving a bronze medal too. The girls showed a wonderful spirit of determination to fight on under strong competition and we hope to see more of them all next season. What a wonderful opportunity for Hampshire youngsters to experience sport in a friendly, but competitive environment at the Hampshire Youth Games 2010. Congratulations to Team Winchester and very well done all of you!
Tressa Armitage continues her winning ways!

Tressa Armitage has received a further £1,000 financial support towards coaching and
other costs from Asda / Sports Aid. This brings the total amount received
over the last 12 months to £1,500 from Asda / Sports Aid. She was presented
with the latest award by Chris Huhne, the MP for Eastleigh, and the Mayor of
Eastleigh, Councillor Derek Pretty, at Asda's Chandlers Ford superstore
recently.
Here's a report from Lionel Whyton:
The new Andover Junior Table Tennis champion is Edwin Slot, from the South Wonston club and the Cadet champion is Edwin's sister, Chrissie. On Thursday night at the John Hanson School they swept all opposition aside to complete a unique double. Chrissie got through to the final by beating both Morgan Smith & Ray Lockington in straight sets. The final seemed to be a formality as she once again took little time in defeating Reuben Grimshaw 11-7, 11-5, 11-5 to secure the title.
Edwin saw off Grimshaw, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8, 14-12 in the quarter-finals and Morgan Smith in the Semi's to set up a final against Pierce Stretch. Slot began well taking the first set 11-4 with some powerful hitting, but Stretch came back strongly to win the second 11-7. The two players have similar styles of play and entertained the spectators with an awesome display of attacking shots, before Slot just emerged 11-9 winner to go 2 sets to one up. Stretch got off to a bad start in the fourth and was quickly four points adrift, but fought back well to 8-8. At 9-10 down, Slot had to pull out his best shots to level once again and from there went on to take the championship 13-11.
Congratulations and good luck in the next stage.
South Wonston Table Tennis Club was again privileged to have been invited by Winchester City Council to coach its table tennis squad and select its team for the Hampshire Youth Games 2008 held at Aldershot. All the teams were required to comprise 4 players from school years 7 and 8 only and must include at least one girl.
On arrival, it was found that ten table tennis teams had been entered, including four from Portsmouth, the 2007 champions. The teams were divided into two Groups of 5 teams which played each other. Winchester's team was runner up in its Group and played Test Valley in a semi-final, losing a very close, drawn match against Test Valley by only one point. Test Valley went on to lose in the final against new champions Fareham. Meanwhile, the two losing semi-finalists played each other with Winchester beating Basingstoke & Deane by just 5 points in another very close, drawn match.
All the squad members seemed to enjoy the coaching sessions. Team players, Reuben, Charlotte, Ryan and Morgan all performed to the very best of their abilities in the Games and were rewarded by being able to proudly display Bronze medals, as can be seen in the accompanying photograph taken by John Johnston.

Winchester juniors excelled at the English Schools Individual Championships
in Doncaster on 26th April. Garth Kinlocke and David McBeath,
who both played in our League in the 2006-7 season, met in the Under 16 Semi-Final.
Garth beat David, and then went on to win the Final!
Tressa
Armitage very narrowly missed the Under 13 Girls Semi-Final, while
Chrissie Slot took equal 3rd place in the Under 11 Girls. You can see a report featuring
these players

(Ed: Garth Kinlocke
and Ruihao Zhang
both played in
the Winchester League last season. Many of us will remember
their pulsating Junior Final at the Winchester Civil Service
Club in
May (see report here) )
On
Sunday 21st October, Chrissie
Slot travelled to Cirencester to play in the 1-star under
11
championships.
She
started in the tournament with 0 points and was unseeded in the event.
She
progressed through her group beating Nicole Cleminson, Katie Wilson,
Lydia Anslow and only losing in five to Holly Van Haver.
Chrissie and Nicole came out as the two highest in their group as they
had both won 3 matches and lost one. However, Chrissie had
won more games overall so she was declared the winner of the
group.
This
meant she was through to the semi final to play the runner up
of the other group, Francesca Barnes. Chrissie, being
completely unseeded in the event would have only been
expected to get through to the consolation. Chrissie lost the
first two games 8-11 8-11. After she thought about what she
was doing - she came back 11-7 and 11-8 to level it out to
2-2. The 5th game was very close and at the change of ends,
she was 5-4 up. Chrissie just found that bit extra to take
the final set 11-6 and the match.
Chrissie
was now through to play Esther Hoskin, a very experienced player, in
the finals. Chrissie knew that even if she lost this, she'd
have a trophy, so she was more relaxed about this match. She
started very well and built up a 9-7 lead over Esther only to lose
12-10 with Esther having to raise her game. Chrissie built up
the same 9-7 lead in the 2nd game, this time Chrissie won
11-7. In the 3rd game the score went to 10-10 and Chrissie
managed to win 12-10. Chrissie was now 2-1 ahead and now
believed she had a chance of winning. However, Esther showed
her experience, fighting for every point to take the next two games and
the U11's title.
Chrissie
did very well to get 2nd place.
The Winchester team's first opponents were Bournemouth and all players played well but lost 6-4 (despite the fact that Bournemouth did not have a girl). Bournemouth then went on to beat their next opponents (Fareham & Gosport)
Then it was Winchester's turn to play Fareham & Gosport. Francis won both his singles matches, Gengshi won one boys singles match and Tressa went on to beat Bethany Wells in the girls singles. Francis and Tressa were successful in the first mixed doubles match which meant that it was crucial for Oliver and Tressa to win their final mixed doubles match. Playing the siblings Bethany and Kieran Wells, Oliver and Tressa triumphed giving Winchester the win. Winchester ended the day in second place behind Bournemouth.
Unusually, all of Winchester's players live in the city!
